The Earth’s groundwater seems limitless… π§
In some parts of the world, the economic demand for groundwater exceeds the safe pumping capacity. In such cases, βthe government must step in and take measures,β says Marc Bierkens from Utrecht University.
According to him, groundwater management should address both the demand for and supply of water.
On the demand side, farmers could:
β
Use less water by growing crops that need less irrigation.
β
Adopt more efficient irrigation systems.
β
Apply smart irrigation techniques to match water usage to the needs of the soil and crops.
On the supply side, governments and water management authorities could:
β
Increase water availability through managed aquifer recharge, where rainwater is collected to refill underground reserves.
β
Use renewable energy-powered desalination plants in coastal areas.
